Dusky
Pygmy Rattlesnake
(Sistrurus miliarius barbouri)
Identification: Gray
or dusty-looking snake with black ovals along its back,
sometimes connected with a thin orange stripe. Belly
is white with large black patches. A black eye stripe
extends from the front of the head straight through
eye and
beyond.
Size: Average
18” (45cm) length. Record
31” (78.7cm) length>
Diet: Insects,
frogs, lizards, mice
Habitat: Primarily
seen close to water in pine flatwoods, longleaf pine
or scrub areas.
Comments: Due
to its small rattle, which sounds similar to insects
buzzing, its small size, and its determination to hold
its ground rather than slithering away, the pygmy rattlesnake
is the venomous snake people are most often bitten
by. No one
has died from the bite of this snake.
